WHAT IS AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)?

Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is a common disorder in patients which can lead to vision loss and blindness. It often causes thinning of the retinal layers, fluid build-up, or bleeding under the retina. Unfortunately, it likes to affect a specific area of the retina called the macula. The macula is responsible for patient’s central vision. This is where we have our best vision and we use it to read, drive, identify faces, and see the many details around us every day.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRY OR WET AMD?

Retinal specialists often divide AMD into two broad categories – “dry” or “wet” AMD. Dry macular degeneration means there has often been a thinning of the retinal layers and a build-up of an unusual substance called “drusen” in the macula. Wet macular degeneration means there has been fluid or blood under the surface of the retina.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR AMD?

There are different treatment options available depending on the severity of the AMD including laser, injections of drugs into the eye, and ocular vitamins. Retinal specialists can often help preserve vision for many years in patients diagnosed with AMD. Let Dr. Stelton see if you are at risk for AMD by calling today 941-777-5000.
